Bio:

Siuan McGahan is a self-taught painter who was born in Dublin, Ireland. As a teenager, she spent time in the Caribbean country of Haiti and was very influenced by Haitian artists. She studied Mathematics and Philosophy at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has worked in engineering at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and subsequently as a visual effects artist in the motion picture industry, including work on "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King". She very happily decided to leave practicality behind and currently devotes all of her time to painting and music. She lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Statement:

Trained formally as a mathematician, my work is informed by the beauty of the mathematical world using painting as an alternative visual language to the strictly formal symbols of mathematical notation. Just as mathematical notation itself is not mathematics, but rather a way of representing a subject that exists in the human mind, I layer geometric shapes, computer parts, portraits, landscapes, skies, birds and environments to narrate an exploration of the man-made and the natural, the mechanical and the purely organic, the subjective and the objective. Mathematics can be defined as the science of patterns: patterns that appear in our physical, biological and sociological world as well as patterns that resonate from our minds and thoughts. My work begins with these patterns- real and imagined, static and dynamic, inorganic, and organic..
