Though I do a photoshoot of my subject, I aim to paint a picture that could theoretically be created without the use of a camera. I want a pose that looks like it could have been held (not an easy task for young children.) I choose traditional textiles and attire for a potentially "classic" look while aiming for a very contemporary aesthetic. I use a variety of painting and drawing mediums to create a rich and diverse set of textures within each painting. Sheer, metallic ink allows wood-grain to show through the background and creates a luminous base that is reminiscent of stained glass and illuminated manuscripts. Textiles play a significant role in creating a tapestry of patterns, patterns that are always my starting and finishing point.
